I was working on a client's server hard drive storage management solution; we have 3TB on the server ( a proprietary one at that, expensive and complicated to expand in a 2U multi- VM situation), and needing to go to 8TB and more;

Their goal is to keep everything live for the last 10-15 years, rather than keep the present hot, the recent past warm, and the distant past in cold ; relating to hot, warm and cold storage. Remember, juggling data is not easy and leaving everything available is risk yet for a company; sometimes, they just want ease of access and ease of management.

So, with that in mind. Rather than manage the existing expensive space, let's just add on low cost off the shelf storage space that can be easily managed.

This is where existing platter drives come in; from Western Digital, Seagate, etc. the colors and types are interesting, let's break it down.

1. Manufacturer
2. Drive Technology
3. Size
4. Durability
5. Speed
6. Warranty
7. Customer reviews and opinions

is that it? yep. for now. i prefer nvme over sata over sas or ide or pata over serial over tape or paper

What are the colors? Well, that is  weird in a way. Let me spell it out and maybe come back and do the math for you. I do and don't have time to explain yet just realize. Someone either in engineering or marketing or both came up with this.

1. colors; red, purple, black, green, gold (you noticed, I did not mention blue - that is consumer edition. use them for consumer purposes only and they are very inexpensive yet very durable for 2-3 years)
2. sizes; 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, terabytes. the non-binary terabytes I don't trust
3. warranty; 1, 2, 3, 5 years - okay. gold is great
4. durability; that is MTBF (mean time between failure). the best is RED/GOLD

Ps. I have to get back to work...

Do I have a favorite drive type? yep. red or gold. yet my favorite colors are emerald green or cobalt blue. those two colors are the best for me, and i hope some marketing junkee bastard doesn't take advantage of me and my expression here. Cobalt (Kobalt) Blue and Emerald Green are the best, in the dark and glow or alive in light.

more to come...
