For me, every three years, I reload my OS.

1. backup data
2. reload OS
3. restore the data I want
4. archive the rest of the UN-necessarily immediately needed data
5. merge with cold storage and archives
6. update cold storage archive indexes and reports
7. optimize and rotate and replace active and storage drives as necessary
8. storage drives last at best 5-7 years so migrate and archive
9. identify new hardware to transition to for project work
10. repeat this list every three years

more to come...
