In the past 25 years, we have always had many ways to tracking support requests.
 
What is the best technology that you liked? even for a while?
 
RT (request tracker)? - i like this one - link
FootPrints? 
Spiceworks? - i like this one too...
 
in all the organizations I have worked, led and managed, we had something.  open source choices
 
even a clipboard with pen and paper worked for low transactions.... it works. low tech. low fidelity.
 
whatever you use, make sure it works the way you want it, otherwise, kill it and find something better.
