It has been a year since we first got the Code Signing (basic) Certificate for the Go Green PC Tuneup software and utility, in order to protect the download and installation and executable. Well, it took four to five hours to figure out the SignTool last year, and this year, that was not the case.
We took 1 hour to figure out which provider to use, we had GoDaddy but for $199 and a lot of paperwork and days in delays versus SSL.com in less than 30 minutes for $129. Chat support was awesome and twice had to remind myself how to do the following:
1. get the cert ordered
2. verify with state, city, county and/or government documentation (something very official)
3. verify via automated phone authorization (automated via double email verification confirmations)
4. get .p12 and import and export via digicertutil to .pfx
5. download and install via the mmc cert the CA bundle (*.*) into Certificate Trusted Root and Intermediate stores.
done.. 1 hour...
Godaddy?!! - great for domain registration, who surpassed Network Solutions after the registration decentralization during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Not good for SSL except the first year, and probably not Code Signing going forward, but hey, they are #2 in my book and #1 is SSL.com, and the rest like Comodo DigiCert, etc.. those are further down the line. Do we need an EV Code Sign, nope.
more to come...
oh yeah. we have godaddy site SSL's for now, but the Code Signing might lead to SSL.com website certs next year..
