The Reality Check - Windows 7 end of life versus Windows 10

There is a certain reality check on the end of life for Windows 7.

There are over 800 million Windows 7 installations out there. Okay, let's be conservative and say 400 million.

Does Microsoft expect everyone to cough up $500-1000 to replace that many machines?

Its like capital reserve planning for roofs and other capital expenditures (CAPEX versus OPEX).

So, software is digital and in-tangible therefore OPEX, versus computers and hardware which is CAPEX.

Accountants have been sorting out this itemization for a few years, and subscriptions on software as a service have been landing in the OPEX area.

So what does that mean for the business owners and IT? Do you have to upgrade? Yes and No.

Microsoft threatens to cut off support in order to make more money with Windows 10 rollout. It's a self fulfilling prophecy. All companies want regular cash flow, even if they say Microsoft Windows 10 is free.

However! The hardware requirements to support it are not free. The dual core processor with 4GB of RAM and 1TB 5400 RPM aging hard drive is going to struggle with that upgrade.

So we are upgrading 50% of our client base since some of their medical vendors are threatening non-compliance for HIPAA which is not true either. Its just a money grab for everyone, just like Y2K.

We just have to play along and do what the business owners want.

If you had an upgrade replacement program for hardware then you are covered. Schedule your upgrade replacement cycle to coincide with this eventuality.
